Last week, I returned to the office for the first time in two months.

It’s always a bit of an adjustment going back to work after not working for some time.

Now, I have to deal with the overstimulation of working in a hectic office environment in New York City.

Don’t get me wrong, I am incredibly grateful to have a career.

However, to handle my professional responsibilities effectively, I need to relax regularly outside of work and balance this overstimulation.

I thought I was the only one in my office facing this obstacle until I spoke with my colleague Kevin.

Kevin is one of the coolest guys I know.

We’ve worked together for ~6 years now.

Whenever I see him, he’s smiling, relaxed, and is quick to ask anyone he comes across how they are doing.

As we were catching up last week, he asked me what this week’s article would be about.

I told him that coming up with topics to write about each week is a challenge, but I wanted to answer a question I came across: “When was the last time you felt truly relaxed?”

But I didn’t want to write about what I do to relax because I discuss it often.

So, I asked Kevin, “When was the last time you felt truly relaxed?”

He sat back in his chair, thought about it for a few seconds, looked at me, and said, “Probably the last time I spent time on my land.”

For context, Kevin owns a plot of undeveloped land outside of the city (that he purchased for a song).

I always thought I was the only one within my circle of friends who needed to leave the city to find relaxation and balance.

Hearing Kevin say it positively reinforced my desire to get out of the city and off-grid as often as possible.

What he shared made me feel like I wasn’t the only one, and that it’s essential to find that balance between your professional life and your personal life.

More importantly, to spend some time alone.

When I am working, I am constantly surrounded by people.

Even working from home, I am often in virtual meetings with others.

Spending time alone is a counterbalance to my professional responsibilities.

So, what’s the point of all this?

The point of all this is to encourage you to spend some time alone.

Step back and find that balance.

More importantly, step back and find that balance alone.

It may just be the physical, emotional, and mental well-being game-changer you’re looking for to balance your professional responsibilities.

It may be what you need to feel truly relaxed.

Quotes that caught my attention:

When you have balance in your life, work becomes an entirely different experience. There is a passion that moves you to a whole new level of fulfillment and gratitude, and that's when you can do your best...for yourself and for others.

—Cara Delevingne

It's all about quality of life and finding a happy balance between work and friends and family.
