The One Experience Everyone Should Have
At least once in their life
Good morning!
I hope this finds you well.
Welcome to another edition of The Matt Viera Newsletter.
The newsletter with the goal to inspire you to invest in life experiences.
Thank you for your continued support.
In 2017, I picked up and read The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss and within a few pages, I was hooked.
But it wasn’t the promise of working less that caught my attention.
It was something else.
A concept I had never considered before:
The Mini-Retirement.
For those unfamiliar, a mini-retirement is simply stepping away from work for an extended period, e.g., spending a month or more in a dream destination, fully immersing yourself in a different environment.
It’s not a rushed vacation or a long weekend getaway.
It’s an intentional pause, a chance to slow down, and an opportunity to experience life differently.
I already had a lot of paid time off from my job at the time, but I had never once considered using it to travel for an entire month. It almost seemed too much. But something clicked.
I had the time, so why not use it?
So, in 2018 I made it happen.
I embarked on my first mini-retirement: a month in Europe.
That trip changed everything for me.
I revisited Nürnberg, a city I had once called home and reconnected with my love for travel (and Europe).
From that moment on, everything changed for me.
That one trip sparked something inside me that I couldn’t ignore.
Since then, I’ve taken four mini-retirements, with my fifth planned for this summer: six weeks in Italy (my longest mini-retirement yet).
So, what’s the point of all this?
The point of all this is to share with you that I firmly believe a mini-retirement is one experience everyone should have at least once in their lifetime.
That’s a hill I’ll die on.
The idea of stepping away from work for a month (or more) might feel impossible.
Maybe you think you don’t have enough time, enough money, or enough flexibility.
Maybe you’ve convinced yourself that extended travel is reserved for the ultra-rich, the retired, or the lucky few who are digital nomads.
But I’m proof that it’s possible without being a millionaire.
I didn’t retire early. I didn’t inherit wealth. I am not a millionaire.
I simply made it a priority.
And if I can do it, so can you.
A mini-retirement isn’t just about travel. It’s about recalibrating your life. It’s about breaking out of the routine that keeps you on autopilot and experiencing something new.
It’s about giving yourself the chance to live now (not just when you’re 65 and finally “allowed” to take time off).
And because I believe in the transformative power of mini-retirements, I wrote an ebook, The Beginner’s Guide to Mini-Retirements.
This 50+ page guide lays out a simple, no-stress approach to planning, executing, and experiencing your first mini-retirement that’s based on everything I’ve learned from my own experiences (grab your free copy by clicking on the link below).
If you’ve ever dreamed of escaping the grind, even for a little while, I tried my best to put together a guide to help you turn your dream into reality.
Because life is too short to wait until retirement to start living.
And no one on their deathbed ever said:
“I wish I spent more time in the office.”
