I'm currently reading a self-improvement book titled "Awaken the Giant Within" by Tony Robbins.
I've restarted reading the book several times because I want to dive deep, really absorb the concepts, and take notes.
The other day, I came across a line in the book that stopped me in my tracks:
"The fact is that most people would work much harder to hang on to what they have than they would to take the risks necessary to get what they really want from their lives."
That single sentence hit me on so many levels.
It positively reinforced one of the biggest decisions I made in my life: the risk I took when I quit practicing law.
Back then, I really didn’t want more money or a bigger title.
What I really wanted was less time trapped in an office.
So I walked away from the legal profession and transitioned into a career in education.
Fast forward 14 years and that single decision shaped a life I'm proud of and happy to be living.
My weekends are often spent off-grid in my camper. My summers take me to Europe. I've driven cross-country from New York to Wyoming multiple times.
Additionally, I own a home in one of the world's most expensive cities. I have a partner I share my life with. I have financial stability, adventure, and time.
And none of it was guaranteed.
I didn't know how it would all turn out.
I only knew what I wanted.
And I was willing to take the risk to get it.
What's the point of all this?
The point is simple: growth, freedom, and fulfillment almost always require risk.
Taking a risk doesn't mean being reckless.
It means choosing courage over comfort when you know your current path isn't aligned with the life you truly want.
Every year you stay stuck in something that drains you is a year you don't get back.
When you make the decision to take a risk (whether that's changing careers, moving to a new city, or finally pursuing something you've been putting off), you give yourself the chance to build the life you really want.
The alternative is staying where you are, hoping things will magically improve, and waking up years later with regret.
The Final Point
I'm living proof that risk, while uncomfortable, can be the gateway to the life you actually want.
I didn't settle. I didn't cling to what I had. I stepped into the unknown.
And because of that, I now have financial stability, adventure, and time in ways my former self couldn't have imagined (but always hoped for).
The question you need to answer is: what are you clinging to that's keeping you from what you really want?
Because the truth is, the biggest risk isn't walking away.
The biggest risk is staying somewhere you really don't want to be.
Next week I will be traveling to Germany to meet up with my best friend who lives in Scotland and a buddy of mine I went to law school with.
I’ll spend most of my time in Frankfurt, but will be making trips to Bamberg (to visit the brewery of my favorite beer) and to Munich (for Oktoberfest).
As such, I will not be publishing newsletter articles on September 30 and October 7.
Prost!
Quote that caught my attention:
“In a world that is changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks.”
