The "Big Something" Revealed!

In this newsletter, I mentioned several times in the past few months that I could not take a mini-retirement this summer or my annual cross-country road trip from New York City to Wyoming because I was working on a "Big Something."
The details have been finalized, legal documents signed, and a once elusive goal has been accomplished.
I am happy (and proud) to announce that I am going from paying the rent in New York City to paying a mortgage in New York City.
We purchased a home here in Brooklyn.
We closed on the property this past Friday.
This is a big step and the start of a new chapter.
To say I am excited is an understatement.
I have lived in Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy/Clinton Hill area for the past 16 years.
We are moving deeper into Brooklyn, a neighborhood called Bay Ridge.
To give you some perspective, we will be on the Brooklyn side of the Verrazano Bridge.
We are about 8 blocks from the Bridge itself.
Now, being that deep into Brooklyn, my commute to the office will be longer.
But what I gain from this move is priceless.
Every time I go into Bay Ridge, my blood pressure lowers.
It is a calm, quiet residential neighborhood.
It's like being in the suburbs without being in the suburbs.
A beautiful, decent-sized park is across the street from the apartment building towards the west.
Along the park (and within) is a running, biking, and walking trail.
The Hudson River is on the west side of the park, about a five-minute walk from the building.
Along the River is another running, biking, and walking trail.
In terms of commute, a subway station is about 4 blocks east.
But at the corner of my block is an express bus stop (a Greyhound-style coach bus) that will drop me off three blocks from my office when I commute.
The best part is that 2 blocks east of the apartment building is 3rd Ave, which has plenty of restaurants, but most importantly, there are bars—plenty of bars.
The apartment itself is massive relative to New York City apartments.
It's about twice the size of the apartment we are moving from.
There's a living room on one side and a hallway on the other that leads to the bathroom and bedroom.
In the middle is a decent-sized kitchen.
The space is big and comfortable enough to host brunch and dinner parties for 10-15 guests.
We were unable to do that in the apartment we are moving from.
I can go on and on about how excited we are about this move to a bigger space within New York City.
The only downside is the commute to work, the distance from where the apartment is from Manhattan.
But considering I rarely head into Manhattan if I don't have to, it's not much of a loss.
It's a big deal for us, considering we are not millionaires, we are public servants, and we live in one of the most expensive cities on the planet.
Truth be told, I never thought about the day when I would tell people that we actually purchased an apartment here in New York City.
If I can do it in one of the most expensive cities on the planet, you can do it no matter where you live.
Quote that caught my attention:
“Many people take no care of their money till they come nearly to the end of it, and others do just the same with their time.” —Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
