Is this all there is to it?

Does this sound right?

Graduate from high school.

Go to and graduate from college (maybe).

Find a job (or a career).

Buy a nice car.

Find a life partner.

Get married.

Buy the house.

Buy a nicer, more expensive car for each adult (because you need to be comfortable commuting to work).

Have kids.

Get the dog(s) and/or cat(s).

Buy a bigger house (because your first house is not big enough).

Take a 1-2 week vacation each year.

Work during vacation because you don't want a full email inbox and work you need to catch up on the day you return to work from vacation.

Send kids to college (so they can repeat the cycle).

Work for the next 40+ years.

Buy stuff you don't need over the course of 40+ years because “I deserve it” and 1-2 week vacations per year is just not enough.

Retire in your 60s (maybe).

Is that it?

Does that sound right?

Is that the American Dream?

Quotes that caught my attention:

"The bad news is time flies. The good news is you're the pilot." —Michael Altshuler

"Time is really the only capital that any human being has, and the only thing that he can't afford to lose." —Thomas Edison
