I Turn 53 Tomorrow

I went out to lunch with close attorney friends recently.

One of them told me about a recent lunch she had with a former colleague.

A colleague who's now a partner of the law firm my friend used to work in.

Instead of expressing positive aspects of his success, my friend's former colleague spent time expressing frustration:

• No real vacations

• No time for his family

• No energy for the things he once loved

My friend then said to me, "That's why I could never go back."

And at that moment, I was overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude.

Gratitude for the choices I've made:

• Choosing to have a life outside of an office

• Choosing to step away from the 60+ hour weeks

• Choosing a life filled with time for life experiences

I do not miss those 60+ hour work weeks.

I don't miss the feeling of being confined to an office from dawn to dusk.

Only to go home to sleep, shower, and put on a fresh suit in the morning.

Day after day.

My mistake during those days was believing I could maintain relationships, stay physically fit, and that one week of vacation per year was enough.

Unfortunately, most people believe success is all about hard work, long hours, and short vacations.

But take a moment and think about it.

What's the point if most of your time is spent in an office?

Success isn't about how much or how hard you work.

It's about what you achieve outside of work.

Your career should enable you to live a balanced and fulfilling life.

Remember:

Every day that passes by is one less day you have on this planet.

Do you really want to spend it in an office?

With that, I hope you have a wonderful week filled with moments that truly matter.

I know I will.
